The Onion iPad App

On April Fool’s Day 2011, the joke was on us. The Onion released its own iPad app to the masses, creating a better browsing experience for iPad users. If you are not familiar with the Onion, it is a satirical weekly publication. Content within the Onion articles are all for fun and wholly invented and created. Disclaimer – Do not believe what you read in the articles.

The app provides iPad users the mobility of bringing recent articles published by the Onion staff wherever you go in a convenient magazine format. The front page of the app shows headlines and featured articles as well as videos and other media. Like many other news browsing apps layouts are made in both landscape and portrait modes of the iPad.

Incorporated into the app are videos and images that are fered from The Onion’s various articles. There is a nice video player for all of the video content. Videos play in an overlay as to not disrupt browsing or cause any excess loading. Video playback was smooth and hilarious.

Aesthetically the articles themselves aren’t very pleasing. Most articles contain one featured image and just a body of text for the content. This is definitely a turn off for those who usually expect eye-catching pages and layouts. Also what makes this app still quite inferior to it’s web version is the lack of an archive for articles. Only most recent articles can be found in the app. Those looking to have the chance to reflect on previous articles should just stick with the web version.
